Join us on Thursday, April 6th at 7:00 PM in our Sanctuary for "A Journey to Hope" A cantata inspired by Spirituals, by Josephy M. Martin.
All are welcomed.
The word “Tenebrae” comes from the Latin meaning “darkness.” The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Holy Week service that uses gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week, from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry to Jesus’ burial.
This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus’ death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, sometimes with a final candle, the Christ candle, carried out of the sanctuary, symbolizing the death of Jesus. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ’s death and await the coming Resurrection.
At First Christian Church, we will gather for a worship experience on April 6th at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary as the Chancel Choir presents “A Journey to Hope” by Joseph Martin. This presentation will include the chancel choir and holy communion. We will move from light into darkness as we mourn Christ’s suffering and the suffering of the world. This time for repentance, turning toward God, and reflecting on our lives is the final step in our Holy Week preparation for Easter’s new life.
This major sacred work is musically inspired by traditional spirituals and tells of the ministry and passion of Jesus through familiar repurposed tunes, narration, and scriptures. From the rhythmic vitality of "Ride On, King Jesus" to the languishing strains of "They Crucified My Lord," from the stately dignity of "Give Me Jesus," this work delivers both ministry and artistry. Whether presented with Brant Adams' inspired orchestrations, A Journey to Hope is a unique and effective cantata experience.
