“I lift up my eyes to the hills—from where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1,2 (NRSV)
The Appalachian chain of mountains has afforded generations of persons who have lived near or traveled to them an opportunity to experience their majesty and grandeur. In doing so, they have witnessed the glory of God, our Creator. The range extends from central Alabama into southeastern Canada. Settlers to this vast
region, including Native Americans and later Europeans, brought their rich traditions, including music. Many of these tunes comprise Joseph Martin’s cantata, Appalachian Winter, which leads us from the Advent season, a time of waiting and longing, to a celebration of the birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior.
